National Middle Child Day is celebrated every year on August 12, and it is all about giving the “in-between” child of the family a little extra love and attention. The day was created in 1986 by Elizabeth Walker, who wanted middle children to feel seen, appreciated, and celebrated instead of overlooked.
In many families, the oldest child may be remembered for being first, and the youngest may be remembered as the baby of the family. Middle children can sometimes feel like they are quietly tucked between the two. National Middle Child Day is a sweet reminder that every child has a special place in the family story.
Why Middle Children Are Worth Celebrating
There are so many wonderful things about being a middle child. Many middle children learn early how to share, compromise, listen, and keep the peace. Because they are often balancing relationships with older and younger siblings, they may grow into people who are thoughtful, creative, independent, and good at understanding different points of view.
Middle children can also bring a unique kind of joy to a home. They may be the family comedian, the helper, the peacemaker, the artist, the encourager, or the one who quietly notices when someone else needs support. Whether they are loud and outgoing or quiet and reflective, middle children deserve to know that their role matters.
A Personal Note
I do not personally have a middle child, but I have been blessed with many children in my life in different ways. The kids I taught in school became “my kids” in my heart, my children’s friends became part of our extended family, and I also love my daughter-in-law and my beloved son-in-law dearly. I may not be able to single out one middle child in my own home, but I can still appreciate how important it is for each child to feel noticed and valued.
If you do have a middle child, a middle sibling, a middle grandchild, or a middle-born friend in your life, today is a perfect day to make them feel extra special. It does not have to be expensive or complicated. Sometimes the simplest gesture - a phone call, a favorite snack, a handwritten note, or time spent together - is what means the most.
Fun Ways to Celebrate National Middle Child Day
The best way to celebrate is to focus on what your middle child or sibling enjoys. Let them choose the activity, the meal, or the movie. Giving them the choice helps them feel heard and appreciated.
· Take them out to lunch or cook their favorite meal at home.
· Watch a movie they get to choose.
· Color, craft, bake, or do a hands-on activity together.
· Plan a simple mini date, such as coffee, ice cream, or a walk.
· Look through old photos and share favorite memories.
· Write them a note telling them what you admire about them.
· Let them pick the family game, playlist, or dinner menu.
· Celebrate them publicly with a kind social media post or family message.
The activity itself is not the most important part. What matters is that the middle child feels included, chosen, and loved. National Middle Child Day is a chance to pause and say, “You are not forgotten. You are important to us.”
Until Next Time,
