When I first looked at this holiday, I had to wonder if it meant changing your mind back-and-forth or having changing opinions, depending on who was in the conversation until suddenly I realized it was dedicated to the fabulous little sandal, gone, mainstream, and fashionable flip-flop.
Matthew Palmer buyers liason for several upscale department store chains stood at a huge glass window overlooking the street. The display of flip-flops had turned out phenomenal, all in preparation for national flip-flop day. He couldn’t wait to see it finished.
When he was a kid his mom had talked about the flip flops in the late 60s early 70s you could grab flip-flops at Kmart or Gibsons for two pairs for $1.00. They were an inexpensive summer wear item that barely lasted more than a few months, and they were meant just for the beach, swimming, or keeping my feet off the pavement while playing. If they got muddy you rinsed them off with the garden hose outside along with your feet before you went in the house. You might also wear them to the park, or grocery, but they were never worn anywhere else.
What an amazing comparison to today. The flip-flop is gone not only mainstream but also high fashion. Oh, you can still get an expensive somewhere at Walmart for $4.98 a pair. Https://walmart.com/ip/2454680977?sid=b3bb05ec-8fe0-424e-adde-95555246b38
But you can also spend $90on Tory Burch Kira padded flip flops: https://amzn.to/4ele0zL
Or $350 on Tory Burch Capri Wedges- https://amzn.to/3RZBWB3
And every price, color, style, material and more that can be a magic has been made into these happy little slide your feet in and go shoes. They’ve gone from slapping around to the runway. While they are still controversial in some settings they have been seen on Barack Obama in 2008 and Jennifer Lawrence at the Cannes film festival. Lawrence‘s reasoning was that the shoes that went with her gown were too big, but famous designers are now utilizing the simple shoe with luxury styling such as Chanel and Venetta..
So from the time of the Egyptians and nearly 4000 BC to 10 solid gold flip-flops to the runway of the main fashion houses today we celebrate the flip-flop casual or trendy, cheap or high fashion, expensive or inexpensive, shop for your favorite flip-flop and enjoy. They go everywhere and are available at any price range, material, style, color, heel height, and decoration. Find a pair that fit your favorite look and wear them with pride it’s national flip-flop day!
Until next time,
MG
