Children, both our children and our grandchildren, are the most amazing gift! They bring us joy, learning, inspiration, frustration, agitation, consternation, and unbelievable love. They’re the most amazing bundles that arrive on this earth in need of everything and through hope, love, caring and patience over 18 years you get another whole human being, capable of going into the world and contributing in their own unique way.
When it comes to my grandchild and other kids I love watching all of the faces they grow through from swaddling bundle to toddler to sassy three-year-old trying to get some independence. The outfits they can concoct along the way are just as priceless. Shoes, odd sock combinations, no socks, no shoes, and trying to convince a three-year-old that it’s super cold and she needs a hat and gloves, pants and boots is a joy. When my kids were going up I once just open the door as my daughter continued to tell me shorts and flip-flops…lol! 30 seconds of swirling snow on her suddenly changed her mind. Lol.
The first day of kindergarten for some moms is sad, for me, watching them head out while nerve racking it was joyous because it was another milestone, just like reading, math, homework and handwriting so you can read and write to friends. The heartbreak exhilaration of their first loves, the trials of learning to be a good friend, and the teens as they stumble along the way first through tween and then through teen. What an incredible journey.!
So children’s day is the best way to honor that journey. Here are a few ways to make it more fun.
Do something together like a museum or a fun park
Spend time reading stories or playing games
Try a new restaurant that’s kid centered like Chuck E. Cheese or medieval times
Go to the park or the pool or someplace to burn off some of that energy they have like urban air
Tell them how much you love them every day
Until next time,
MG
