National Day on Writing: Celebrating Stories with M. G. Lorraine
Every story starts somewhere: a question, a memory, an unexpected discovery, or a blank page waiting for its first sentence. On October 20, National Day on Writing invites us to celebrate those beginnings and the words that help us share what we imagine, notice, and remember. Established by the National Council of Teachers of English in 2009, this annual celebration recognizes writing in all its forms. You do not need a published book to participate. A journal entry, a family story, or a few lines written just for yourself belong in the celebration, too.
For readers discovering M. G. Lorraine, today is also an opportunity to explore a growing collection of fiction. From the mysteries of the Dorchester Sisters novels to the everyday adventures of Dexter and Dixie, these books offer different doors into storytelling. They also provide a starting point for a question at the heart of this day: What story would you like to tell?
Discovering the Dorchester Sisters
M. G. Lorraine’s Dorchester Sisters novels bring together discovery, mystery, and family legacy. The two published titles invite readers into stories where questions about the past lead to challenges in the present:
· Fossils: A Dorchester Sisters Novel introduces Kileah Dorchester and a mystery involving missing fossils, scientific discovery, and the protection of a family legacy.
· Antiquities: A Dorchester Sisters Novel follows attorney and antiquities specialist Jennifer Dorchester into a mystery surrounding missing ancient Egyptian artifacts.
A third title, Sequins: A Dorchester Sisters Novel, has just been written. It still has to go through edits before publishing. This story follows Sabrina Dorchester who is a fashion journalist as she stumbles across a drug trafficking ring.
Everyday Adventures with Dexter and Dixie
Writing can turn a familiar outing into the beginning of an adventure. M. G. Lorraine’s Dexter & Dixie Grandparent Adventure books bring that possibility to young readers through stories centered on children and their grandparents. Developed with young co-authors, the series celebrates imaginative storytelling and family connections. Its five published titles are:
· Covered in Chocolate: A Dexter & Dixie Grandparent Adventure Book 1
· The Grocery Game: A Dexter & Dixie Grandparent Adventure Book 2
· Scavenger Hunt at the Falls: A Dexter & Dixie Grandparent Adventure
· Trapped in the Pumpkin Maze: A Dexter & Dixie Grandparent Adventure
· Lost at the Farmers Market: A Dexter & Dixie Grandparent Adventure
In Covered in Chocolate, a trip with Grandma Green to order a birthday cake becomes a messy adventure. It is an inviting reminder for young storytellers: you do not always have to invent a faraway world. Sometimes a shop, a family outing, or an ordinary afternoon can give you the seed of a story. After reading a Dexter and Dixie book together, try asking, “What adventure could we write about our own day?”
Your Story Belongs in the Celebration
The best way to celebrate National Day on Writing is to write something. Let these books spark an idea, then make it your own. You might imagine a puzzling discovery, record a favorite family memory, or turn a routine errand into an unexpected adventure. Set aside ten minutes and choose a prompt:
· A mysterious object arrives with a note that says, “Find out where I belong.” What happens next?
· A simple outing with a grandparent takes an unexpected turn. Tell the story.
· Write about a family memory you would like someone to remember years from now.
· Finish this sentence: “I write because…”
Do not worry about making the first draft perfect. Give yourself room to explore, then return to the words and see what you want to shape. Families can write together, children can illustrate their stories, and readers can share what inspired them. If you choose to join the online celebration, use #WhyIWrite to add your voice.
Today, we celebrate the stories already written and the ones still waiting to be written. M. G. Lorraine’s books offer places to begin from discoveries in the Dorchester Sisters novels to adventures with Dexter and Dixie. Your next page can begin anywhere, too. Pick up a pen, open a document, and give your idea a first sentence. What will you write today?
Until Next Time,
