National Kissing Day

Happy National Kissing Day! As a writer of romantic suspense, the kiss is one of the most important beats in my storytelling. Getting it right every moment, every character, every emotional exchange matters. But being human makes a day like this especially thought‑provoking.

Humans use kissing in a million different ways, and each one carries its own meaning.

A child kissing a parent, sibling, or grandparent is often their first real act of giving by choice. If you’ve raised children, or been an aunt, uncle, or grandparent you know that moment. A toddler offering a kiss, or even blowing one across the room, is pure, unfiltered love. It fills your heart in a way nothing else does.

As kids grow into preteens, those kisses become fewer and farther between. They’re usually tossed over a shoulder as they race out the door, more as an “I love you, bye!” than a conscious act of affection. Still meaningful, just different.

Then comes the teenage years, when the focus shifts from family affection to the early search for a mate. Kissing becomes an art - something to practice, perfect, and compare. Reputation matters in the teenage dating world, and a “great kisser” suddenly becomes social currency.

And then adulthood arrives, where kissing takes on its own full range of meaning. It becomes part of intimacy and pleasure, yes, but also a greeting, a comfort, a sign of familiarity. A kiss carries its own signature - as recognizable as the XOXO at the bottom of a letter.

No matter the age or stage, kissing remains one of the most universal, expressive forms of human connection.
