National Sunglasses Day

Sunglasses Day

Happy sunglasses day! One of my favorite necessary accessories. I have a collection of both prescription and non-prescription sunglasses for wearing with or without my contact lenses. I’ve collected them for more than 50 years there I go showing my age again, but I’ve always loved them.

An article from “All About Vision.com they did September 25, 2019- “The History of Sunglasses from Foster Grants to Today” by Dawn Papandrea says, “ sunglasses date back to a prehistoric Inuit who fashion goggles that could protect them from the awful glare and pain of snow blindness.”

The next measure improvement in the sunglasses were from the ancient Chinese where judges used them to hide their eyes so they could remain impartial.”

Although around sunglasses were rarely seen again in the 1400s in Italy and then again in the late 1700s. The English optician James Ayscough added tint to eyeglass to treat vision problems.” at that point blue and green tinted lenses would be developed.

The last major development by Sir David Brewster, who said he polarized light, gave us polarized sunglasses.

Overtime some glasses became more mainstream, especially in 1929 when Sam Foster sold the first pair of sunglasses on the Atlantic City boardwalk and they became quite a hit among beach goers.

The brand became known as foster Grant. In 1936 saw Edwin H Land cofounder of Polaroid create the polarized light filter which Ray-Ban sunglasses created using anti-glare for pilots and marketed them to pilots and outdoor enthusiast.

The price range for sunglasses can be a few dollars to expensive designer lenses. Here are some of my favorites.:

Michael Kors

Tony Burch

Ray-Ban

Versace

Oakley

Designers have embrace them on the runway and have their own complete line of sunglasses in every optician store in the country. And today no one would be caught on the beach without a great pair of ”shades.”

But we have also learned they protect the eye from sunburn, help prevent eye cancer, and more. So no matter your favorite pair, show them off as you leave the house today to shop, garden, go to work, or visit with friends. It’s national sunglasses day -show off your favorite pair!

Until next time,

Angie
